Can the recommended 40mm rebate be increased?

The 40mm rebate from the front face of the surround to the front face of the fire can be increased as much as you like. We have found that anything over 150mm deep seems to cut down the effective heat output. The 40mm rebate is to form a drip line for weather, when the fires are installed outside.
